A New Creation: Chapter 1

On May 9th, I checked into Wellspan’s Surgery and Rehab Hospital at Apple Hill to undergo a surgical procedure known in medical terms as a 4-Level Posterior Interbody Lumbar Fusion, otherwise known as a PLIF.

Although I had had two previous back surgeries in 2001 & 2005 for multiple herniated discs in my lower back, nothing could have prepared me for the complexity of this procedure or the prolonged recovery that would follow. Without getting too technical, this surgery amounted to a total reconstruction of my lower back which took more than five hours to complete, and will take up to twelve months to fully recover.

As I approached the date of my surgery with some apprehension, I found peace in recalling the days and months that preceded and immediately followed my last surgery in June 2005. Although that experience would ultimately result in my life being changed forever, I could have never imagined then the plan that God had for my life, or the path that I would eventually take to arrive at this moment.

So as the nurse wheeled me into the operating room and I began to drift off into a deep and long sleep, I rested confidently in the knowledge that God’s plan for my life had now come full circle.

To be continued….
