Groundhog Day

Since its release in 1993, the movie “Groundhog Day” has occupied a very special place in my heart. While I enjoy the irreverent humor of Bill Murray and offbeat characters like “Needle-Nose” Ned, it’s the movie’s underlying theme of redemption that keeps me coming back every February 2nd to watch it once again.

For those who have never watched Groundhog Day, it is not the typical Bill Murray farce that you may have come to expect during the height of his fame in the 1980s.  When you look beneath its comic surface, you will discover that Groundhog Day is really a cautionary tale of what can happen to us when we accept the status quo and adopt the mindset that today is just another day. We feel ourselves condemned to repeat what seems like the same day over and over again and we no longer strive to become a better version of ourselves. Eventually, we lose hope that anything will ever change, so we settle for a subpar existence of self-absorption and self-indulgence. And as Murray’s character discovers in the movie, this is a path that can only lead to disillusionment, discontentment, and ultimately self-destruction.

Thanks to a brilliantly written screenplay by Harold Ramis, and a superlative performance by Murray, Groundhog Day now represents for me a day of rebirth and renewal. It has become a day for me to reflect on my own desperate need for redemption, and to discover a renewed sense of determination to become all that God has created me to be. It’s a day when I feel compelled to stretch myself beyond my limits in order to grow, learn and experience new things.  Although, I don’t see myself learning how to ice-sculpt anytime soon :).

I now look forward to Groundhog Day each year with great anticipation.  While most of my friends will be anxious to find out if there will be six more weeks of winter, I will be spending the day contemplating where my life has gotten “stuck” this past year.  And you can rest assured that tonight after the dinner dishes have been cleared, I will settle down to watch Groundhog Day as I do every February 2nd.  There is certain to be lots of laughs, and a few tears welling up in my eyes, as I watch pompous weatherman Phil Connors eventually discover his true self. But most of all, my heart will be filled with joy as I too embrace the possibility of fresh starts and new beginnings.

Won’t you join me?
