Book Recommendations

I was never much of a reader until I found my faith in 2004.  Since then, I have collected well over 1,000 books. When someone asks me what books they should read, I always recommend at least one book from the following list.  Some of them are classics, others are more contemporary.  All of them have inspired me in different ways, and at different times, to go deeper in my understanding of what it means to live the spiritual life.  So, here is my list of Essentials for anyone desiring to become more like Christ:

  • The Inner Experience by Thomas Merton
  • A Testament of Devotion by Thomas Kelly
  • Life of the Beloved by Henri Nouwen
  • The Imitation of Christ by Thomas A’Kempis
  • New Seeds of Contemplation by Thomas Merton
  • The Pursuit of God by A.W. Tozer
  • Invitation to a Journey by Robert Mulholland
  • Here and Now by Henri Nouwen
  • The Practice of the Presence of God by Brother Lawrence
  • The Confessions by St. Augustine
  • The Cost of Discipleship by Dietrich Bonhoeffer
  • Reordered Loves, Reordered Lives by David Naugle
  • Celebration of Discipline by Richard Foster
  • The Glorious Pursuit by Gary L. Thomas
  • The Good and Beautiful God by James Bryan Smith
  • The Trouble with Paris by Mark Sayers
  • Emotionally Healthy Spirituality by Peter Scazzero
